Forming Objects

Project Type

Product Design

Date

December 2020

Forming objects is a project I took part in where we had to take 3 everyday items and redesign each one, them making form the leading factor in the design development. exploring the forms allowed me to push the boundaries of traditional designs while ensuring the functionality remained at the core.

I was tasked with redesigning a torch, a snap-off knife, and a bottle opener. I used form as a key driver in the development process, ensuring each product was not only functional but also visually distinctive and engaging.

For the torch, I explored various shapes that would make it both comfortable to hold and intuitive to use in different scenarios. The form needed to communicate durability and ease of use, while also allowing for a sleek, modern aesthetic that appeals to users. Through prototyping, I experimented with contours and materials that enhance grip and usability, while giving the torch a unique look that sets it apart from traditional designs.

The snap-off knife required a focus on ergonomics and safety. I worked on creating a form that provides a secure grip, especially for precise cuts. The challenge was balancing the slim, functional profile of the knife with a form that felt solid and reliable in hand. I also wanted to make the knife’s design visually appealing, blending utility with a modern, streamlined look that makes it stand out from other utilitarian tools.

For the bottle opener, I leaned into creating a form that was both playful and practical. The goal was to design something that felt satisfying to hold and use while adding a touch of personality to a simple tool. The bottle opener’s form needed to express a sense of ease and accessibility while offering durability for frequent use. Prototyping different shapes helped me find the right balance between function and a bold, inviting form that engages users at first glance.
