There had been a rise in people choosing tiny homes and micro apartments, particularly in cities like New York and Tokyo. These smaller apartments offered a high-quality living experience and made people reconsider their relationships with space and possessions. This shift often led tenants to desire owning less, promoting more thoughtful consumption.

Designing for micro apartments proved challenging due to limited space. I aimed to create a seating solution that addressed these constraints. Drawing inspiration from Japanese tatami mats and minimalistic design styles, I explored folding mechanisms, disassembly techniques, and multi-purpose furniture to inform my space-saving bench.

Flexibility and versatility became key considerations in my design. I developed a multipurpose bench that could serve as both seating and a floor mat, incorporating side tables or a coffee table. I hoped the bench would transform the space, ensuring it could be easily repositioned to maximise every inch available.
