In a design collective called Paperhoods I was part of a multi-discipline team and designed Luminate, a versatile, paper-based lamp specifically tailored for use in refugee camps. The lamp addresses the challenges of close-quarter living by providing both functional lighting and a communication system for camp residents.
Luminate can be easily hung inside refugee tents, designed to fit the tent structure seamlessly, and features a detachable device for added portability. The lamp's colour-coded light system allows users to signal different statuses, such as requesting help or indicating that they are asleep, offering a simple and non-intrusive way to communicate. This feature enhances both safety and privacy within the camp environment. Additionally, the warm light provided by Luminate contributes to creating a more homely and comforting atmosphere in otherwise difficult living conditions.
By focusing on sustainable materials, such as paper, the lamp is both cost-effective and environmentally friendly, making it an ideal solution for large-scale distribution in camps. Luminate merges practicality, safety, and a sense of home, contributing to improved living conditions for refugees.
